A friend of Busch’s had previously told police that Christopher Busch had killed the first victim in the Oakland County case, Mark Stebbins. Christopher Buschīusch committed suicide in November 1978 and items found in his apartment were intriguing to authorities. One in particular that captured their attention was a young man named Christopher Busch, a known pedophile. The Detroit News offered a $100,000 reward for information leading to the killer’s capture. The four victims were between 10 and 12-years-old, and all were abducted and held for days before they were killed and placed in a different location. The similarities in all four cases were striking. Police appealed to the public for information. The residents of suburban Detroit were terrified as an unknown killer preyed on their young children. He had been sexually assaulted and suffocated. King was wearing his clothes, which had been pressed and washed, and his skateboard was placed next to him in the ditch. Six days later, teenagers driving in a car spotted King’s body in a ditch alongside a road in Livonia. King walked out the rear entrance of the store and disappeared.
The boy left his home in Birmingham on March 16, 1977, with his skateboard to go buy candy at a local drugstore. The final known victim of the Oakland County Child Killer was 11-year-old Timothy King. Like the others, Mihelich was laid out in the snow wearing all the clothes she had disappeared in. Mihelich was missing for 19 days until her body was found by a mail carrier in a rural area of Franklin Village. Jill Robinson’s body was laid out neatly in the snow in sight of the police department in the town of Troy. The young girl was fully clothed, still wearing her backpack, and had been shot in the face with a shotgun. Like Mark Stebbins, four days later Robinson was found dead. Robinson packed a bag and ran away from home after an argument with her mother on December 22, 1976. The next to vanish was 12-year-old Jill Robinson of Royal Oak. Four days later, Stebbins’ fully clothed, strangled body was found laid out on a snowbank in an office building parking lot.
Mark Stebbins, 12, went missing from the town of Ferndale. The first victim disappeared on February 15, 1976. Investigators are certain that four children died at the hands of the killer, but others are suspected as well. The elusive slayer has remained at large for over 4 decades, but authorities continue to pursue the man known as the Oakland County Child Killer.
